about

ra·di·um girls
rā′dē-əm gûrlz
noun
· A group of young female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch dials with self-luminous paint
· From 1917-1926 the United States Radium factory in Orange, New Jersey employed more than a hundred workers, mainly women, to paint radium-lit watch faces and instruments, misleading them that it was safe.
· Workers mixed glue, water and radium powder, and then used camel hair brushes to apply the glowing paint onto dials. The brushes would lose shape after a few strokes, so factory supervisors encouraged their workers to point the brushes with their lips, or use their tongues to keep them sharp.
· For fun, the young women painted their nails, teeth and faces with the deadly paint produced at the factory. Many became sick; it is unknown exactly how many died from exposure to radiation.
· In 1928 five of the women -- dubbed the “Radium Girls” -- successfully challenged U.S. Radium in a court case that established the right of individual workers to sue for damages from corporations due to labor abuse
· The Radium Girls' saga holds an important place in the history of both the field of health physics and the labor rights movement.

lyrics

glowing in your garden, pass the time away
lonely hearts will harden when you keep the world at bay

quiet desperation, yearn to find the time
free from condemnation when you leave it all behind

i can see it in your eyes, let it wash across your face
as we age we realize what we are what we chase

did you find the time for all the things you wanted?
did you find the time?

i can see it in your eyes, let it wash across your face
as we age we realize what we are what we chase
i can see it in your eyes, let it wash across your face
let us find out...

did you waste your time?
did you chase it all away?
should we make some time today?

i can see it in your eyes, let it wash across your face
let us find out...

did you waste your time?
did you chase it all away?
should we make some time today?
