· Leonard Peltier is a Native American activist convicted of killing two FBI agents during a shoot out in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota
· Peltier was a member of the American Indian Movement (AIM), founded in 1968 to advocate for the rights of Native Americans across the country.
· The murders occurred at a time when AIM activists and residents of Pine Ridge were being intimidated and killed by hired vigilantes who were armed and trained by the FBI
· Following a controversial trial in which government prosecutors knowingly withheld evidence Peltier was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences
· He has now been in prison for over 40 years, often in solitary confinement
· To this day many people and human rights organizations insist Peltier was framed for the murders by a corrupt judiciary due to his outspoken support for Native American civil rights
